Lobster
-------
Version 1.0
This software is CHARITYWARE. If you like it and decide to keep it, you are
encouraged to donate a small amount to your favourite cause, to keep your
conscience clear.
Needless to say, this game must not be resold for profit.
Introduction
------------
Lobster is a program which allows you to play scrabble against your Mac.
The recommended system for this game is any colour Mac running System 7.x with
a 14" monitor.
How to play
-----------
Simply follow the prompts on the screen. Either you or Newton (your computer
opponent) can start the game.
When faced with the 'Enter your word' prompt, you have a number of options:
a) Type in a word to play (in lowercase). A blank tile is denoted by an
asterisk. To play the blank, type in the required letter in UPPERCASE.
For example, if you have a rack containing 're*olts' and you want to
use the blank as a 'b' to play the word 'lobster', type
Enter your word
==> loBster
and press RETURN.
You now need to type in details about where to play the word. To play
your word starting with the first letter at row 'h' and column 'f' and
playing ACROSS the board, type
Enter play details
==> hfa
To play down the board, use the letter 'd' instead of 'a'. Lobster will,
of course, check for illegally placed words.
You can press ESCAPE at any point to restart the entire procedure.
Once you've typed in your word and play details, Lobster will score it for
you and ask if you want to commit yourself to that play. If not, you can
type in another word. If you do, then Lobster will look up your word in
its lexicon and challenge it if necessary. You can tell Lobster to accept
the word but if you abide by its decision, you forfeit the move.
b) Exchange part or all of your rack by typing SWAP. Then key in the letters
you want to exchange. If you type SWAP and change your mind, just hit the
ESCAPE key.
c) You may pass by typing PASS. If both players pass twice in consecutive turns,
the game ends.
d) When your brain is numb and you can't play on, you can ask Leibnitz, another
computer player, to take over for you. Just type COMP. If you type COMPX, you
will not have to press the SPACE BAR after each move.
To continue the game yourself, press the ESCAPE key just after Newton has
played and keep it pressed until play is returned to you.
Saving games
------------
You can only save and load games when it's your turn to play. You can also save
finished games to review at a later date, particularly useful if you've just
won.
Technical Details
-----------------
Lobster has a 29,000 word lexicon which happens to contain all valid 2, 3 and 4
letter words (in accordance with the English OSL, 1991). It will therefore play
some very obscure words; this is not for the faint-hearted. Most words tend to be
Americanised, e.g. 'harbor' is in the lexicon, 'harbour' isn't.
The computer algorithm is based on a powerful technique proposed by Appel and
Jacobsen (CACM, May 1988, Vol.31, Number 5, pp.572-8). This method allows Lobster
to compute ALL possible legal moves given a board position, a rack of letters and
a lexicon. As a result, it plays a formidable game.
Lobster averages well over 350 points per game. However, Lobster has no positional
sense and will leave triple word squares open for the opponent. It doesn't try
to keep a 'well balanced' rack either; instead it aims to beat you by sheer, brute
CPU force with an unfaltering eye which doesn't miss a thing.
If the computer takes a while to make its move, then it's very likely holding a
blank in its rack.
This software was produced using Think Pascal 4.0. The author wishes to remain
